Libraries and Databases
  • British National Formulary
    Provides UK healthcare professionals with authoritative and practical information on the selection and clinical use of medicines in a clear, concise and accessible manner.

  • Centre for Reviews & Dissemination (CRD)
    Established in January 1994, the CRD provides the NHS with important information on the effectiveness of treatments as well as the delivery and organisation of health care. On offer are rigorous and systematic reviews on selected topics, a database of good quality reviews and a dissemination and information service.

  • eMIMS
    Offers registered users easy access to an extensive range of drug information.

  • First Databank Europe 
    A drug database with information to help GPs make informed decisions when prescribing medication, dressings, appliances and borderline substances.

  • General Practice Research Database (GPRD)
    A computerised database of fully anonymised patient data collected from practices which use In Practice Systems Vision software. It is used for public health and medical research purposes, particularly drug safety studies. It is owned by the Department of Health and operated by the Medicines Control Agency.

  • GP Notebook
    Contains information in an aide-memoire format that is useful in the primary care consultation and has summaries of national guidelines such as NICE.

  • Medical Protection Society
    Offers a wide range of medico-legal services, including professional indemnity for adverse awards of costs and damages in medical negligence cases. Run exclusively for, and largely by doctors and other health professionals it is a not for profit organisation.

  • Medicine Guide
    Drug information for registered users. The data is provided by pharmaceutical companies and also supplied to the regulatory bodies.

  • Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
    The executive agency of the Department of Health safeguarding public health by ensuring that all medicines and medical devices on the UK market meet appropriate standards of safety, quality and efficacy.

  • Medicines Partnership
    A source of authoritative and up to date information about concordance for academics, healthcare professionals, patients and the general public. The site aims to stimulate discussion and to encourage appropriate action.

  • National Electronic Library for Health
    The library is working with NHS Libraries to develop a digital library for NHS staff, patients and the public.

  • National Library of Medicine
    The NLM Gateway allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems at the US National Library of Medicine.

  • Pubmed
    Anyone can access MEDLINE's 10,000,000 biomedical journal citations to research biomedical questions. Clicking the 'Related articles' link for each abstract can expand your search.

  • QRESEARCH
    An ethical high quality non-profit making database for research derived from general practice. QRESEARCH is based in the Division of Primary Care at the University of Nottingham.

  • ScHARR
    Sheffield School of Health and Related Research, Sheffield University, Another site providing an excellent list of evidence-based links.

  • The Health Protection Agency (HPA)
    Protects the population from infection by detecting, diagnosing, and monitoring communicable diseases. It provides evidence for action to prevent and control infectious disease threats to individuals and populations.

  • The Primary Care Electronic Library
    (PCEL) is an indexed and searchable information resource targeted at those involved in Primary Care.
