GP2GP Record Transfer
Barking and Dagenham 2009
The first e-learning training materials produced by PRIMIS+, focusing on Managing the GP2GP Record, have been put to good use by facilitators and practice staff in Barking and Dagenham PCT. 'Managing the GP2GP Electronic Health Record' includes a quiz, workbook, audio visual presentations and links to the Connecting for Health GP2GP online resources.
The training materials mark the beginning of work to develop a blended learning approach to all training at PRIMIS+. The new approach combines online learning opportunities alongside face-to-face training sessions and learning networks.
Rashid Aleem, Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Facilitator at Barking and Dagenham PCT, used the online materials during a pilot workshop for all of his practices engaged in GP2GP transfer.
Rashid invited a practice manager and a lead GP or other nominated person from each of six practices to work through the online tools. He found that the quiz provided an interesting talking point for delegates, with the group completing the workbook together.
By using the presentation and accompanying narration, Rashid removed the need to book an external speaker, guiding delegates through the materials and fielding any questions himself.
Rashid explained that the 12 delegates who attended had described the workshop as a positive experience, which built on the system supplier training they had already received.
After completing the session, Rashid said: 'The training was comprehensive and explained what you should know, what to expect and what you need to do as a practice to engage with GP2GP electronic record transfer.'
Having undertaken the PRIMIS+ GP2GP training in spring 2007, Rashid acknowledged that it was useful to refresh his knowledge of the subject: 'I obviously needed a recap, so the online tools were helpful for me too. Facilitators have to cover a variety of areas within their role and can get sidetracked. Unless you are in a practice which is actually using GP2GP, there's little chance to use the system or to refresh your training.'
Rashid added that the PRIMIS+ e-learning materials will not only be of use for initial GP2GP training, but by allowing the learner to re-visit the materials, are also valuable when practice staff and facilitators need to brush up their knowledge.
The PRIMIS+ resources are easy to access either in groups or for solo learning. Rashid said: 'I think these materials are a great idea for busy practice staff and facilitators. This type of training resource will be of great help on various topics in the future.'
Following the success of the pilot, Rashid went on to train staff at each of the 35 practices in his region who signed up to the GP2GP scheme at two further workshops.
