PRIMIS is ideally placed to support the needs of practices for improved information management skills and good quality data. It is already working in 80% of primary care organisations in England, delivering training designed to suit the needs of GP practices. This training has now been updated to reflect the changing environment.

In addition, a number of brand new modules have been developed that will tackle various areas of importance to practices as they move towards electronic patient records.

The new training modules will be delivered to practices through local PRIMIS information facilitators, who currently number over 300 based in more than 240 Primary Care Trusts. The training will include topics such as summarising records, coding guidance, security and confidentiality, and data quality for quality outcomes. PRIMIS will also be introducing a new training module this autumn called "Data Quality and Patient Safety". This has been commissioned by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and is designed to give GPs an understanding of how they can use their computer systems to enhance patient safety.
