The background to PRIMIS

Why PRIMIS?

Poor quality information directly affects each use of that information. It can have implications for clinical care and disease surveillance, for example. Without agreed standards for recording and exchanging health data, computerisation can significantly increase the risk of poor-quality data, leading to misinterpretation and adverse events. The Department of Health recognises that locally based informatics skills training and development programmes will facilitate improvement.

The need for a co-ordinated approach to data quality and analysis underlies the National Programme for IT in the NHS and the various information management tools and services being procured and implemented by the programme under NHS Connecting for Health. There is a need to support the implementation of these tools and services through local training and information management support, as well as to link into other data quality bodies working within NHS Connecting for Health to achieve their goals.

NHS Connecting for Health is delivering the IT systems and services which will help to create a more modern, efficient NHS. It will enable information to be shared between NHS organisations. All those involved in the care of a patient will have secure access to up-to-date, accurate information for improved diagnosis, treatment and care. Patients will also have easier access to their own health and care information.
