PRIMIS (Primary Care Information Services) was set up in April 2000 as a free training and support service. Through this contract PRIMIS+ provides training and assistance to designated staff or information facilitators employed by Primary Care Trusts or local Health Informatics Services. These facilitators cascade their knowledge and skills to GPs and practice staff in their local health communities. This helps GPs and their staff to provide quality patient care by making the best use of their clinical computer systems and improving data quality and information management.

Following the award of a four year contract by NHS Connecting for Health, the breadth of the service expanded in November 2005, together with a name change to PRIMIS+.

PRIMIS+ extended their information service providing data extraction and analysis tools and services. They provide advice and specification services to Department of Health for national data extraction projects such as influenza, pneumococcal and swine ‘flu.

In 2007 PRIMIS+ worked with a range of partners including Department of Health, Connecting for Health, British Medical Association, The Royal College of General Practitioners and National Clinical Leads to produce the Information Management and Technology Directed Enhanced Service (IM&T DES).

In 2009 the PRIMIS+ contract was novated to The NHS Information Centre for health and social care (NHS IC).
